EVENT INFO...
What's happening on the PPA Funride Calendar?
a) Download the latest events calendar PDF from the link on the right of this page, or...
b) click on the event name above, or
c) just scroll down to the calendar below,
and you'll get all the info! PS Remember - if you are a PPA member and we have your email address, you'll automatically receive a weekly email with event information, route and start times changes, and the like...
Licenced / league riders:
Please note that you have to specifically enter the PPA / Virgin Active Pro Classic (league) in order to ride in the racing categories for licensed riders, as opposed to riding in the general funride categories. You cannot enter the racing section on the day of an event; you need to do so a few days beforehand as a specific racing number needs to be issued. Please note you need a valid CSA license, as well as meet the specific PPA seeding criteria for the racing sections, in order to enter the Pro Classic (league) series. Please contact Eulogy at Cyclelab, the administrators of the racing section, for more information.
EASY ENTRY TICKETS
While PPA recommends certain entry fees to organisers, at times it may be necessary for them to raise the entry fees in order to make the numbers work (most events on the PPA calendar use the event to raise funds for charity). To this effect, some events may charge higher entry fees - please check whether or not Easy Entry tickets will be accepted. As always, the pre-entry (online) fees are the cheapest, so enter online and save!
CYCLING SA DAY LICENSES
For any timed event in SA, all participants are required hold either
* A full (elite) racing license, or
* a cyclo sport racing license.
Cyclists who are members of a club/ association/affiliate recognized by Cycling South Africa (like PPA) and who hold (minimum) cyclosport licenses, do not need to take out any further CSA day licenses. Note that PPA members automatically hold cyclosport licenses, as PPA payd this on behalf of its members (PPA membership cards suffice until CSA issues cyclosport license cards to PPA members).
If you are not a PPA member nor a member of any affiliate of CSA's, you need to take out a day licence, issued by the organiser of the event on the day. This R35 day license is valid only for the one event for which it was issued and the cost thereof is not included in the entry fee.
At some events, the short route is not timed and is taken as a development initiative/fun event. Normally day licenses are not needed for these routes; check with the event organiser.
NOTE RE SEEDING:
Seeded numbers and seeded starts is a benefit of PPA membership at PPA events, hence PPA members (wearing their seeded numbers) start on front of non-members. If you are a visiting rider and wish to start with the seeded groups at an event, kindly contact the PPA Office at least 3 days before the event to enquire about short-term PPA membership and a seeded number. Note: This cannot be arranged on the day.
WHAT MUST YOU BRING TO AN EVENT?
Always bring your
* Helmet (no helmet, no ride)
* PPA funride number (also to MTB events)
* Transponder
* Your bicycle, kit, cycling shoes, gloves, water bottle, cycling sunglasses, sun block, entry fees if you did not enter online, some cash for a snack afterwards, etc...
IF YOU FORGET YOUR SEEDED NUMBER OR HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT?
If you joined PPA in the week of the event, please contact the PPA Office to arrange for your number and membership card to be sent out to the event for collection. Note: This must be pre-arranged with the office on (021) 689-8420, otherwise your number will be posted to you.
If you forget your funride number at home, you have two options:
(a) Pay R5 for a temp unseeded number, valid for the day, allowing you to start with the unseeded riders behind the PPA members
(b) Pay R30 for a temp seeded number corresponding to your start group on the database, valid for the day, allowing you to start with your normal start group. Enquire at the PPA Mobile Office at the event.
WHO GETS RESULTS AT PPA EVENTS?
As PPA pays for the timing at most events on the PPA calendar, only paid-up PPA members will receive an official time on the PPA website, as a direct benefit of PPA membership. However, for some big events like the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, the seeding series events like Die Burger and 99er, and some big MTB events like Nelsons Creek and Stellenbosch, the organisers themselves pay for timing services. In these cases, all riders receive a result.
What is a "listed Mountain Bike event"?
A 'listed' mountain bike event does not have PPA staff or crew present on the day, and PPA funride numbers & timing is not used on the day. These events are normally not used for PPA seeding, as PPA is not paying for the electronic timing of the event (as with other events on the PPA calendar). Easy Entry tickets are not accepted. "Listed" events are really selected events that are simply listed on the PPA calendar for the information of cyclists.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION
Great new routes! The 55km and 24km routes start on a fast, flat section before the first short, non-technical climb in the Marloth Nature Reserve. Expect both dirt roads and jeep tracks in this section, linked by stunning single track.
Slightly more technical riding waits as you exit the Reserve, followed by a fast descent through the berry orchards, past the Municipal Dam and back into Marloth for more fun single track. The two routes split at the stables, with the 24 km riders heading back to the venue.
The 52 km riders now head off to the Bontebok National Park, where good climbs and two stream crossings wait. Look out for bontebok, rooihartebeest and other game before heading back to the finish. The average rider can expect to take 4-5 hours to complete the 55km route, and 2h30-3 hours for the 24 km route.
For beginners and not-so-fit riders, the organisers recommend the scenic 12km route. The 12km route will not be timed.
DIRECTIONS TO VENUE
From Cape Town, take the N2 past Caledon. At Swellendam, turn left at the second turn-off and follow the signboards to the Powell Sports Grounds (local Rugby club). ROUTE DESCRIPTION
One of the most scenic rides on the calendar, using private property not normally open to the public. All routes incorporate flowing singletrack, jeep and “tweespoor” tracks through wheat, canola fields and fynbos, stunning views and an interesting little 150m climb to the finish.
The 70 km route takes riders twice to the top of Koringberg, from where you can see all the way to Table Mountain and across the Swartland. Be ready for two technical downhills that will test both brakes and downhill skills. Climbs, descents and flat sections are evenly dispersed, with about 11% single track; 15% gravel roads and the rest on jeep tracks.
The 40km route pedals up Swartberg (700m climb in 3km), returning via a fast singletrack. Expect some 17% singletrack, 19% gravel roads and the remainder on scenic jeep tracks, with 30% climbing in total.
The 20km route is fairly flat, with only one short, steep climb. The rest of the scenic route takes place over gentle rolling hills and is suitable for novices and children. This route will be untimed. Children u/10 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
DIRECTIONS TO VENUE
From Cape Town, take the N7 past Malmesbury. Take the Org De Rac Wine Estate turn-off from the N7 just past the Berg River and follow the signs on your left. The estate is situated between Moorreesburg and Piketberg, about 120km from Cape Town.
NOTES
Food stalls at the venue. Spectators are encouraged to visit the small town of Koringberg, where you can also see 40km and 70km participants at the water point in town, and visit the local restaurant! Easy Entry Tickets accepted. This event was awarded as the best new event on the PPA Funride Calendar for the 2009 / 2010 season. Same great ride at last years prices!

ROUTE DESCRIPTION
View the route and ‘ride’ it on Google Earth at www.potberg.blogspot.com. Potberg is a wilderness area, which makes this event something very special. Sections of the routes are opened only for this event. All routes are circular and have received rave reviews from our ‘test riders’ and past participants.
The new 75km route has some great new single track sections. Expect some 1400m of climbing. Both the 55km Eland Route and the 32km Bontebok Route will show you the beauty of the De Hoop Nature Reserve as cyclists make their way down to the rugged coast line. The 10km route is a safe, fairly flat course on gravel roads through the farmlands and is child/beginner friendly.
DIRECTIONS TO VENUE
Take the N2 to Caledon and take the Bredasdorp turn-off. Continue with the main road through Bredasdorp and turn left onto the Swellendam road, then turn right towards the De Hoop Nature Reserve. You now still have roughly 50km of dirt road until the venue at the Potberg Environmental Centre; expect to take over 2 hours from Cape Town.
NOTES
Plenty of accommodation available in the area – come on the Friday and join us for a 25km night ride as well. Non-cycling friends and family members are invited to join us for a 14km or 26km trail run on the Saturday. Note: Prizes and times will be allotted only to cyclists wearing a transponder. All children u/10 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Easy Entry Tickets accepted.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION
The 50km and 35km routes include new single track that is open to the public, year-round! The longer routes require technical expertise and fitness to handle the long climbs, rocky, twisty descents and river crossings. The 15km route includes one steep climb, while the rest is a mild pedal back to town.
From the Sports Grounds, all routes head out through orange groves and across farms to tackle the fairly steep climb up Middelberg. The 15km then returns, while the two longer routes split at Lentelus, with the 50km route heading out to Elandskloof. The routes rejoin at Goeweneurskop, where stunning views and more singletrack (fast, rocky downhill!) through fynbos await. The last part of the ride combines scenic riding along farm and gravel roads through fynbos and orange groves with more climbs and fast descents. In all, a ride devised by cyclists, for cyclists!
DIRECTIONS TO VENUE
From Cape Town, take the N7 towards Malmesbury. Continue past Malmesbury, Moorreesburg and Piketberg and travel over the Piekenierskloof Pass. Immediately after the pass, turn right towards Citrusdal. As you enter Citrusdal, turn right at the four-way-stop and follow the signs to the sports grounds. Allow approximately two hours travel time from Cape Town.
NOTES
All riders under 10 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Easy Entry Tickets accepted.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION
The 9km route contains a small river crossing and only 32m of climbing. It starts in an oak-lined avenue and goes through buchu fields, around a farm dam and through orchards. The 37km route contains a steep climb to Avontuur dam. After the first 10 km, you will have climbed some 300m and be on the plateau at the base of Zebraskop in pristine fynbos. We cycle through various farms with the Groot Winterhoek mountains on the left and the Rooi Karoo in the valley below. Now follows some pretty rough jeep track, a river crossing, farm back roads, single track and more! Then follow the ridge down into the Banghoek Valley, and return to the finish. In all, some 685m of climbing (mostly in the first half). The 59km is also mostly jeep track with two sections of single track of 6 km and 2 km respectively and 1400m of climbing. This is a fair amount so come prepared! The single track on all routes is not too technical but is rocky in places and there are one or two sections that will need careful negotiating.
