Welcome to the PPA's road cycling web section!
If you are new to cycling and the PPA - WELCOME! In this section you'll find more information on PPA funrides, what to expect and generally how things work.
Please click on the link on the left that reads "PPA Funride Rules" to bring you up to speed as to what our various marshals look out for at events. Of particular note are the rules relating to crossing the white (centre/median) line, littering, and general behaviour at events. Also note that you receive a result for an event only if you ride with your electronic timing chip and cross the timing mats at both the start and the finish.
We really love to see kids at events - after all, they are the front bunch riders of the future! - but if they younger than 10 years, we request that a responsible adult cycles with them for the duration of a funride, to ensure that they get around the course safely. While gear restrictions apply for young league riders, we also strongly recommend that all kids ride on restricted gears until the age of 17, in order to protect growing muscles and ligaments.
In the section GETTING STARTED you'll find tips on how to ride your first funride, how to ride a tandem, some training programmes and general cycling tips. Visit this section regularly, as we'll update it as often as possible. And if you have a question on road cycling, just drop us an email and we'll get one of our experts to get back to you!
Lastly, please remember to always wear your helmet (apart from it being law in South Africa, you never know when a dog may run out into the street in front of you; a car misjudge its distance from you or another cyclist swerve in front of you.
Also make sure that you wear visible/brightly coloured clothing, and that you have front (white) and rear (flashing red) lights on your bike should you ride at times when the light is less than ideal.
Have fun & safe cycling!
